Dissolve times

The dissolve times vary according to water temperature. The tests that we carried out were not based on total dissolve time as this can take a long time in really cold weather especially the seams of the bag, which are double thickness and also heat-treated. The tests were based on the very first air bubbles that appeared once the PVA had been immersed in water.
We used different water temperatures and tested both bags that hadn’t been pierced and bags that had been stabbed a dozen times with a baiting needle. All of the bags were filled with 2oz of 2mm pellet and an inline 4oz lead and we held above the water by approx 6 inch. They were dropped and the time measured by stopwatch, the time was rounded up or down to the nearest half a second once the first air bubbles were released from the bag.
| Water temp | Unpierced bag | Pierced bag |
| 8c / 46f | 23.5 secs | 12.0 secs |
| 9c /48f | 22.0 secs | 12.0 secs |
| 10c / 50f | 21.5 secs | 11.0 secs |
| 11c / 52f | 21.0 secs | 10.5 secs |
| 12c / 54f | 18.5 secs | 10.0 secs |
| 13c / 55.5f | 16.0 secs | 9.5 secs |
| 14c / 57f | 16.0 secs | 9.0 secs |
| 15c / 59f | 15.0 secs | 8.5 secs |
| 16c / 60.5f | 14.0 secs | 8.0 secs |
| 17c / 62.5f | 12.5 secs | 7.0 secs |
| 18c / 64f | 11.0 secs | 6.0 secs |
| 19c / 66f | 10.0 secs | 5.5 secs |
| 20c / 68f | 9.0 secs | 4.0 secs |
| 21c / 70f | 8.5 secs | 3.0 secs |
As you can see the times as the water temperature goes up tend to come down by a second or there abouts each time. The concerning thing is how quickly the pierced bags start to break down as the water temperature rises. In deep water in the middle of summer I would doubt a pierced bag would hit bottom intact in depths of more than 10 or 12 feet. That is based on a bag tied correctly and using 4oz of lead sinking at a rate of approx two and half feet a second.
When fishing very warm or very deep water you can either use a double bag or just wrap tape around it.
All of the fish shown in our photos are English fish caught during 2006 from Wellington Country Park. All fish have been caught using Temple Products PVA, Dynamite Baits and Monster Tiger Nut boilies.
